Strategic Plan 2004-2006

Executive Summary: The Board of Directors of Being Alive People with AIDS Action Coalition has developed a strategic plan to expand the organization’s programming and infrastructure. The goal of several strategic planning meetings (which led to the creation of a full strategic planning document) was to identify the best ways to meet the increasingly complex needs of fellow people living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County. As a membership organization, the Directors took into account our core organizational value that prioritizes and promotes services to people living with HIV disease by people living with HIV disease.

The Board focused its efforts on enhancing current programs that include Wellness, Peer Support, Treatment Education, Outreach, Prevention, and Advocacy for people living with HIV disease. The Board focused its planning efforts on building the agency’s capacity and infrastructure, HIV prevention education for people living with the virus, creating new fundraising events and unrestricted revenue streams, increasing attendance at Public Policy committee meetings and grassroots advocacy events, developing board member skills, and focusing on diversifying its membership as well as coalition-building efforts with AIDS service organizations and agency funders.

The Board of Directors undertook this task by receiving reports from program staff on program goals, operating procedures, action plans, and evaluation tools. This plan was then designed, taking the three strategic meetings into consideration as well as individual discussions with board members, staff, and members.

• The major components of the strategic plan include:
• Preparing to open a second Being Alive site in Silver Lake
• Increasing access to external sources of revenues and developing more board fundraising activities
• Ensuring the voices of people living with HIV disease are heard on public policy issues such as legislation development and budget priorities at the local, state, and federal levels of government
• Connecting peer support services to people who are newly diagnosed with HIV disease in all communities throughout LA County
• Initiating innovative and effective HIV Prevention for Positives programs
• Prioritizing organization capacity building and staff/board/member skills building efforts

The full strategic plan is available to all members, staff and interested persons. Comments should be directed to the Executive Director who is responsible for the implementation of the plan’s goals. The Board of Directors will monitor and receive, as needed, updates on the plan’s results during the Executive Director’s report at the monthly Board of Director meetings. Any update to this plan will be done on an as-needed basis through standard actions and procedures determined by the Board of Directors and the Being Alive by-laws.
