Executive Director Job Description and Announcement
Being Alive is a Los Angles based nonprofit coalition of, by and for People living with HIV/AIDS. Our goal is to ensure that people living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County have a voice in public policy decisions impacting their lives, to inform them of all treatment options for HIV/AIDS, to provide emotional and social support services and activities, and to assist with HIV prevention efforts within the HIV-positive community. The staff, Board of Directors and volunteers include experts in advocacy, public health and policy development, community leaders and health care professionals. We are a “grassroots” nonprofit with a budget of $900,000 and a staff of eight. We are well known in the L.A. HIV/AIDS political community and focus on:
- Political and Grassroots Advocacy
- Treatment Education
- Peer-to-Peer Education, Support, Trainings
- Self-Empowerment Supportive Services
- Wellness Programs
- Social Activities including Crafts, BBQs etc.
- HIV/AIDS Specific Newsletter
- Art Programs
- HIV Prevention Programs
- Speakers Bureau
SUMMARY
The Executive Director functions as the Chief Executive Officer of Being Alive. In this capacity the incumbent is responsible for implementation of policies set by the Board of Directors as well as achievement of annual goals and objectives, and oversight of the financial, program, and administrative management the organization. Guidance and direction is provided by the President of the Board, based on governance and policy decisions of the Board of Directors.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Working with the Board of Directors, members, staff, donors, volunteers, funding sources as well as the community-at-large, the Executive Director:
- Provides overall leadership of staff in the development and implementation of short and long range plans, conformance with organizational policies and other activities. Directs an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place. Encourages staff and volunteer development and education, and assists program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization. Maintains a climate which attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.
- Oversees financial management, including the development and implementation of the annual budget. Responsible for maintaining sound financial practices through adherence with Board-approved policies, compliance with funding sources and supporting auditors.
- Directs the operations of the organization including the development, implementation, and accomplishment of the annual work plan as approved by the Board of Directors. Reviews and evaluates the results of program activities, ensuring that continuing contractual obligations are being fulfilled; allocates resources for greater program effectiveness and efficiency; develops organizational and administrative policies and program objectives for Board consideration.
- Provides assistance to the Board to develop, and implements the Annual Fund Development Plan of the organization.
- Provides information, advice, and counsel to the President of the Board, Board Committees, and the Board of Directors in the creation of policies, programs, and strategic direction of the corporation. Sees that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
- Establishes sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups and organizations.
- Represents the agency and advocates for those with HIV/AIDS in decision-making settings; and the programs and point-of-view of the organization to agencies, organizations, and the general public.
- Promotes active and broad participation by members and volunteers in all areas of the organization's work.
- Maintains a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the HIV/AIDS field and communicates those trends to the Board and staff.
- Jointly, with the president and secretary of the board of directors, conducts official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, executes legal documents.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- At least five years nonprofit senior management experience OR a Bachelors Degree with three years of nonprofit senior management experience.
- Experience in fundraising with a demonstrated success creating and implementing a fund development plan that includes major gifts and foundation relations components.
- Experience in financial management, with success in developing and implementing budgets, and an understanding of income statements, balance sheets and cash flow projections.
- Demonstrated success in the hiring, management and coaching of staff and volunteers.
- Must have knowledge of HIV disease, preferably about the current HIV/AIDS political and funding climate.
- Ability to advocate for and commit to Being Alive’s mission, principles, goals and culture.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate with diverse stakeholders including: members, staff, volunteers, government entities, media, elected officials, donors and others critical to the organizations’ success.
- Proven track record working with coalitions, clients, staff, community leadership and Boards of Directors.
- Must be fluent in English and Spanish is a plus.
SALARY
$65,000-$80,000 DOE with health, dental and vision.
