Advocacy Being Alive believes that no one can advocate for our needs better than we can. Our advocacy programs ensure that the voices of people with HIV/AIDS are heard and factored into a wide variety of issues. Advocacy is a two-fold approach at Being Alive: First, we offer one-on-one client advocacy for individuals who are facing barriers within the system of HIV/AIDS care; second, we train our peers to participate in political advocacy opportunities from issues in the California State budget (such as funding for the AIDS Drug Assistance Program) to local public health issues (such as evolving guidelines for commercial sex venues). Being Alive’s advocacy efforts have resulted in a number of successes, including passage of the HIV Patients Bill of Rights through the LA County Commission on HIV Health Services (for all Ryan White funded providers) and organizing successful local lobby days for people living with HIV/AIDS to meet with and discuss pertinent issues with legislators. Make sure to read the Advocacy section of our latest newsletter for up-to-date information. Advocacy Committee Meetings and Organizing Activities Involve peers in building a healthier and stronger HIV/AIDS community. Members build community by informing one another, mobilizing and engaging others to effect policy and institutional reforms. The Advocacy Committee of the Being Alive Board of Directors is open to anyone and everyone who is interested in discussing legislative, budget and community organizing issues that effect people living with HIV/AIDS. For meeting time and location please see schedule below. Advocacy Committee Meeting's are on hiatus temporarily. Please bookmark this page and check back frequently for updates. |
